In recognition of the need to enhance the landscape and protect the wildlife of the Sunderland coastline, the Coast Project was started in 2016 with the appointment of Ian Graham.

The Coast Officer is responsible for protecting the coastal area, its landscape and wildlife and and for mitigating the potential impact of public recreation in the area through a programme of public engagement activity and monitoring surveys.

Coast Ranger

Ian Graham

Following 19 years in the mining industry, Ian retrained in woodland management at Kirkley Hall College and went on to work in conservation roles at Hylton Dene and Herrington Country Park. His work at both sites involved developing volunteer networks and friends’ groups, public engagement events and education programmes.

Ian’s previous experience made him the perfect candidate for the role of Coast Officer on Sunderland’s Coast Project, where he will work with residents, schools and visitors in the conservation of our coastline
